The Loveland Police Division has filed charges against five individuals for their involvement in the graffiti incidents in Loveland. A total of forty-five counts of criminal mischief have been filed in Hamilton County Juvenile Court and Loveland Magistrate Court.

The investigation began in March of 2012 after the graffiti began showing up on buildings, street signs, electrical boxes, and railroad control boxes throughout Loveland. Officers used surveillance cameras, undercover and directed patrols in attempts to catch the suspects.

Officer Anthony Pecord took a personal interest in the case and spearheaded the investigation. He began linking the incidents together while obtaining and developing information about the suspects. Acting on a variety of tips and investigative information, Officer Pecord identified several prime suspects. This led to a search warrant and search of a Loveland residence. The evidence obtained led to positive identification of suspects and subsequent admissions that led to the filing of criminal charges.

“I am proud of Officer Pecord’s initiative and determination in solving these cases,” said Police Chief Tim Sabransky. “He took the lead and worked with other officers to bring charges against the perpetrators.”

Increased law enforcement activity will be conducted during the 2013 Click It or Ticket mobilization period from May 20 – June 2. “Seat belts clearly save lives. Unfortunately, too many motorists still fail to wear their seat belt, so we are going to be actively encouraging seat belt use. Officers will be enforcing seat belt laws and issuing citations for those not buckled up,” said Loveland Police Chief Tim Sabransky.

On May 6, 2013, the City of Loveland’s Building and Zoning Office received among the highest ratings offered to building departments by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) after months of review.

ISO reaffirmed the City of Loveland Class 3 rating for both residential and commercial properties. Among communities in Ohio, the Class 3 rating places Loveland in the 72nd percentile for residential and the 87th percentile for commercial, meaning the City of Loveland is a clear leader in ensuring the safety of our residential and commercial structures when compared to our peers.

The ISO Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) assesses the building codes in effect in a particular community and how the community enforces its building codes. The benefits of excellent building code enforcement include safer buildings, less catastrophe-related damage, lower insurance premium costs for residents and businesses, and lower insurance losses from catastrophes.

Mayor Rob Weisgerber noted that maintaining the Class 3 rating is a particularly notable achievement in light of the elimination of an in-house building and zoning official. “High ratings from third-party evaluators are always hard-won, and this is especially so in light of the cutbacks the City has made since its last ISO evaluation. This rating confirms that we have maintained excellent service levels through innovative efforts. I am particularly proud of the efforts of our Building and Zoning Coordinator, Eva Parker, for stepping up during the reorganization.”

Building and Zoning Coordinator Eva Parker noted, “While we have undergone a number of changes in recent years, we are pleased to maintain this excellent rating as it speaks to the efforts and flexibility of our office to provide quality service.”

The prospect of ultimately lowering insurance costs provides an incentive for communities to enforce their building codes rigorously. Communities with good enforcement can expect commensurate reductions in property insurance rates. For more information or to contact Building and Zoning, please call 513-707-1450 or visit online at http://www.lovelandoh.com/building-zoning.

Next week, in observation of Crosswalk Safety Week in the City of Loveland, pedestrians and motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with crosswalk laws and safety tips to ensure crosswalk safety throughout the community. Drivers are reminded that it is the duty of the operator of a vehicle to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian lawfully crossing the roadway within any crosswalk in the City. Pedestrians also are reminded not to suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is close enough to constitute immediate hazard. Other safety tips for pedestrians include:

Cross streets at designated crosswalks

Stop and look left, right, and left again before crossing a street

Increase visibility at night by carrying a flashlight or wearing retro-reflective clothing

Walk on a sidewalk whenever possible

Loveland residents experience the joys of utilizing sidewalks and crosswalks as a method of transportation, a source of health and recreation, and a means of strengthening and enriching our neighborhoods. Pedestrian activity makes our community a vibrant and active place to live. A combination of safety tips and driver’s respect for crosswalk laws are components to maintaing crosswalks safety in Loveland.
