Once again, Martin, Doug and Kathy showed they can put on a party event! The over 400 participants in the race this year showed their gritty dedication as they ventured out on what turned out to be a perfect night for scavenging. The teams of four were sent out all over downtown Loveland with a list of questions to answer and objects and images to find and identify. It was really fun to watch them in action, particularly as they tried to bob for apples in the fountain without ending up in the fountain.

The event started off as teams started arriving around 6PM, the organizers rushing about to make sure everything was ready for an unforgetable evening. Around 5, the Parade of Judges came down the bike trail. Fully decked out in robes and powdered wigs, they truly looked wise as they danced in to “Here comes da judge”! Once the court was seated and in session, the teams started to check in and receive their packets.

We were excited to see so many of the teams came in costume. Some were pretty simple, but some were very elaborate and many were creative and made by the wearers. We saw everything from Brides of Frankenstein to The Fearless Four (a takeoff of the Justice League) to several of the cast of Gilligans Island. The atmosphere was electric as the teams awaited the start of the hunt. Pirates were plundering, witches plotted, and the tetris team showed how well the team fit together.

The contest is judged based on points earned by the teams. The tasks they were given have 25 or 50 point totals and the teams work against time, trying to earn as many points as possible in a short time. Here are this years top 4 teams!

When the teams finished, they continued on through a progressive beer tasting throughout the 5 pubs in downtown Loveland, going until the witching hour. This is a great event, put on by a great team! Tricyle Productions also puts on Loveland’s Amazing Race, Christmas in Loveland and Pedal, Paddle Party!

Vertical Drop Ski & Snowboard had a great event for kids Saturday, bringing in mounds of ice and an incline & rail system to allow them to learn and show off their skills. Ski’s and snowboards were the tool of the trade as kids went down the ramp, jibbin’ the rail and performing tricks and even a few aerial feats.

Several of the kids were overheard saying this was the most fun they’ve had for a while. They all seemed to be having a great time. The event was the brainchild of Eric & Alan Blume, owners. For a simple $5 entry fee the kids got up to 5 hours of fun. while All Around Loveland was there, we saw some really good tricks and a lot of happy kids.

The event benefits the Susan G Komen Foundation. The prevention of breast cancer is very close to the Blume family and they hope they can continue to support this cause in bigger and better ways as they bring events such as these to area kids!

The Loveland Police Division will be joining more than 950 Ohio law enforcement agencies August 19 through Labor Day 2011 during the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. This program targets impaired drivers and is a prevention program organized by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that focuses on combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness.

Loveland Officers will be out in full force during the Labor Day holiday period beginning August 19. “Drunk driving is simply not worth the risk” said Police Chief Tim Sabransky. “Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for impaired driving can be significant. Our message is simple, if we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions. No excuses.” “We want residents to enjoy the end of summer and Labor Day holiday activities. If you are going to consume any alcoholic beverages, have a designated driver or make other arrangements for a ride. Don’t take the risk of becoming another impaired driver statistic.”

The Digital Bookmobile National Tour will showcase the free eBook download service available from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Groesbeck Branch Library, Wednesday, August 17 (2994 W. Galbraith Rd., 513. 369.4454) and at the Loveland Branch Library, Thursday, August 18 (649 Loveland-Madeira Rd., 513.369.4476). At these free events, readers of all ages will learn how to download eBooks and e-audiobooks from the Library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos.

Everyone touring the Digital Bookmobile will receive a set of ear buds and an entry form for a chance to win a NOOK™ e-reader.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our customers to learn more about downloadable media and all the options available to them through the Library,” said Kim Fender, Executive Director of the Public Library. “Digital books are convenient And can be downloaded from home without a special trip to the Library, and are returned automatically, making it impossible to accrue fines.”

A gadget gallery—featuring an iPod touch®, Android™ tablet, NOOK™, Sony® Reader™, BlackBerry®, Windows® Phone, and more—will help visitors discover portable devices that are compatible with the library’s download service.

The Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades.

The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which will help visitors explore the Public Library’s download service.

Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the library’s digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video.

Library cardholders can check out and download digital titles any time, anywhere by visiting http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/downloadables/.

Patrons can take advantage of the download service 24/7 when they visit the Library’s website. From there, they can browse the growing collection of bestselling, new release, and classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to supported mobile devices. Many audio titles can also be burned to audio CD. At the end of the lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection. There are never late fees or damaged items.

Welcome to the community and the fight against cancer – Lady Riders Against Cancer, Inc.

Lady Riders Against Cancer, Inc. was founded February 3, 2011 and is a women’s motorcycle organization that unites women motorcyclists with friends of common interests, promotes a positive image to the public of women on motorcycles while raising money for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, to defeat cancer. It’s our goal, that someday no one hears the devastating words, “you have cancer”. Lady Riders Against Cancer is a charitable motorcycle organization, not a motorcycle club.

Our first open enrollment date was June 4, 2011 where we welcomed one new member. Our first organized fundraiser, a poker run, was held on July 9, 2011. The poker run was open to 2, 3 and 4 wheeled vehicles. There were 16 motorcycles and one car that participated in a 2 ½ hour route around Warren County. The public is welcome at our open rides and events when scheduled, except when noted members only. Check our calendar for upcoming events.

We participated in our first Relay For Life – Lebanon in 2011 and are already fundraising and getting ready for the 2012 Relay For Life event! We won the “Most Visible in the Community” award. This award was presented to us because we attend events that benefit cancer patients. We take them a little HOPE – information about where and how to find HOPE at the American Cancer Society.

Lady Riders Against Cancer holds our meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm for membership enrollment & to discuss upcoming events that will be held to raise money. Meetings are held at the Sibcy Cline Realtors Building – 103 Oregonia Road Lebanon, OH 45036.

The July Ice Cream Social is highlighted with a classic car show for you to browse and pick your favorites. Last year we had nearly 70 cars, with cars and trucks from the 20’s to the 70’s, immaculate restorations to custom hotrods. Registration begins at 1:30 PM, show begins at 3 PM, and trophies will be awarded at 5:30 PM. Enjoy one (or all) of our homemade flavors- vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip, raspberry, strawberry, peach, butter brickle, and butter pecan.

Kathy Ray, Doug Portman, Martin Schickel, Dr. Gary Huber and a host of over 400 volunteers have done it again. Running, biking and 20 challenges later, we talked with several of the contestants. Some were from as close as Dayton, but we spoke to one woman who hails from Erie PA. We overheard a lot of conversations between first year entrants and those who have participated every year. We never heard one negative comment, which is rare for an event of this size. The team that puts this event together works very hard and it shows. Last year they sold out 2011 in just 20 days according to the crowd. Maybe this year they can beat that record. They have published the event on facebook so people can sign up now!

500 teams of two ran the course Saturday, overcoming challenges like dressing like a baby, being leashed like a dog, taking a chain saw challenge at Stihl, blowing cups with a blown up balloon. Stacking 5 dice on a tongue depressor, heading down the river on an inner tube, threading the noodle over spaghetti, or passing an M&M between team members using straws. These are just a few of the fun tests of skill that were told to us after the race. It was really fun watching the teams at the finish line. They were very excited and all seemed to be having a great time.

The LaRosa’s Finish Line Festival also seemed to be very popular. The contestants were given free pizza and Ben & Jerry’s provided free ice cream. More importantly it was a great chance for participants to cool down, meet new friends and relax after the race. Paxton’s Grill was grilling all day and serving up burgers and pulled pork. The beer was cold and the music was hopping. Even though we didn’t participate in the race, we had a really good time. It was great to meet new friends and hear the stories. We’re looking forward to getting even more involved next year.

AllAroundLoveland.com visited Hickory Woods Golf course yesterday to watch the start of the 2011 Paxton’s Grill golf outing. The outing is a fundraiser for Cancer Free Kids and there was a good turnout. After a very wet early morning we made our way out to the course, which is out off of OH48. It was exciting to see so many people from our community come out for this event. To see avid golfers, family and friends spend a day helping children further supports what it means to be a part of the community of Loveland.
